Manchester United are lining up a move for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and are willing to offer the Spanish international £180k a week in an effort to persuade him to make the controversial move from Anfield to Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been told he has the requisite funds to make bold moves in the transfer market which will not only appease Wayne Rooney but also go some way to bridging the gap to Premier League leaders Chelsea. Roy Hodgson will do all he can to repel interest in the former Atletico Madrid man but he may well struggle to keep hold of a striker who appears to be unhappy with life on Merseyside this season.
Liverpool are of course struggling this term but have at least rid themselves of former co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett and therefore there should be no financial need on the club’s behalf to cash in on one of their most prized assets. However if the 26 year old does not believe he can fulfil his ambitions at the club then he may well have his head turned by the interest shown by the club’s arch rivals as well as the huge pay increase they are willing to offer.
Torres is believed to be worth in the region of £50-60m and would it would be a major coup for Ferguson if he could bring the Spanish goal machine to the club to help boost his sides attacking options. Despite his recent poor patch of form the Liverpool striker has netted an incredible 57 goals in 76 starts.
